Types of syntax: 7 syntactic patterns with syntax examplesīefore we get into sentence structures, let’s discuss syntactic patterns. After that, you’ll be able to tackle more advanced topics, like the types of syntax. Learning these fundamentals is the first step in understanding syntax. If there are multiple adjectives describing the same noun, use the proper adjective order, known as the “Royal Order.” Below we explain more about how to use subordinate clauses in sentence structure.Īdjectives and adverbs go in front of the words they describe. If the sentence has objects, they come third, after the verb.Ĥ Subordinate clauses (dependent clauses) also require a subject and verb. The subject comes first, and the verb comes second. If a sentence includes two or more ideas, it’s best to break it up into multiple sentences. However, imperative sentences (commands) do not need to include their subject because it’s assumed to be the person the sentence is directed at.Ī single sentence should include one main idea. However, these can get confusing, and some require an expert understanding of English, so below we list only the five basic rules of syntax in English, which are enough for constructing simple sentences correctly.Īll sentences require a subject and a verb. If you want to get technical with the English language, there are dozens of rules about syntax you can study. He doesn’t fight Alfred or Robin he doesn’t fight the dry cleaner if they accidentally stain his shirt. Meaning: Batman doesn’t fight anything except crime. He doesn’t work, he doesn’t shower-fighting crime is all he does. Meaning: Fighting crime is the only thing Batman does. No one except Batman fights crime, not even Superman. Meaning: Batman is the only person who fights crime. Keep in mind that only can be an adjective or an adverb adjectives modify the nouns that come after them, and adverbs modify the verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs that come after them. Notice how moving the word only changes the meaning of the entire sentence. To see for yourself, look at the syntax examples below. Sometimes the change is minor, useful for writers who like nuance and subtext, but sometimes the change is more significant, giving the entire sentence a whole new interpretation. Just how important is syntax in English? Changing the placement of a word often changes the meaning of the sentence. In long and complex sentences, constituency is necessary to determine the hierarchy within the sentence, particularly with sentence diagramming. Syntax is essential to understanding constituency, the term for multiple words acting as a single unit. Syntax covers topics like word order and grammar rules, such as subject-verb agreement or the correct placement of direct and indirect objects. Not to be confused with syntax in programming, syntax in linguistics refers to the arrangement of words and phrases. In an interview with Scott Melker, the head of the crypto exchange clarified that institutional adoption will not hurt cryptocurrency but rather aid the pace of innovation within the industry. Linch added that he is anticipating more adoption, stating that leading financial institutions like Goldman Sachs will soon take on a larger role in crypto. Decentralandĭecentraland is a metaverse project based on Ethereum blockchain where people can buy and sell virtual land plots to generate MANA or LAND tokens, the native crypto assets on the ecosystem. The company has partnered with some of the biggest names in the industry including Gucci, Spotify, Nike and more. Due to the dramatic drop in earnings from these sites during the bear market, users are going back to the Web2 platform.According to the latest data, the platform has 58.8 Million daily active users, 4 Million developers and over 9 Million games or spaces creating a “multiverse”. People think there are definitely Pennies to be made, but the platform just makes that possible. Platforms like Decentraland and Sandbox probably have big market caps because users see them as good places to invest rather than as places to switch from their favorite Web2 platform. Why aren’t people staying on the Metaverse platforms?ĭuring the peak of the bull market, a lot of people used the Metaverse platform because it let them “play to earn.” Most platforms used the fact that players could earn cryptocurrency while playing games as their main way to get people to use them. Roblox Corporation, which makes video games, had more than 52,2 million daily active users around the world in the second quarter. The Decentraland community on Twitter thinks that these numbers are still correct. How does the Metaverse compare to Web2 games? 1074/30 = 35.66 users per day, so When we compare this to Steam Micro transactions, how is the decentralization going? Not GTA 5 or CS GO, maybe… These numbers are still terrible. In September, smart contracts were used by 1074 people. Conversation on Twitter Users quickly pointed out that even then, the numbers don’t add up to any of the widespread adoptions of popular games like Grand Theft Auto 5 or the popular PC first-person shooter CS GO. The differences were talked about on the official Twitter account for Decentraland. At the same time, games like Axie Infinity and Alien Worlds need smart contract interaction a lot. Users can buy and sell things on platforms like Sandbox and Decentraland. Users who only search in the metaverse and don’t use smart contracts to buy or sell things might not be included. Why don’t people like Decentraland and Sandbox?ĭappRadar says that an active user is a group of different wallet addresses that interact with the smart contracts of a certain dapp. Alien Worlds, on the other hand, has more than 202,000 users and a metaverse where gamers fight for scarce resources. On the other hand, more than 21,000 people used Axie Infinity. Both projects are worth more than $1.2 billion on the market. People in the community think that nobody cares about the metaverse anymore.Įven though the Metaverse platform is worth several billion dollars, it has trouble keeping customers, according to data from DappRadar, a program that gives information about decentralized applications.Īt the time this was written, there were 616 people in the sandbox and 379 people who used Decentraland every day. Mallory Knodel, Center for Democracy and Technology One way to demonstrate trustworthiness is by not tracking data that’s unnecessary. Ultimately, it’s important to note that VPN privacy policies are built on trust, as these companies have the capability to collect a ton of information and it’s not always obvious what they’re doing with it. Even though the priest’s name wasn’t on any of the data, his device ID was linked to him because it was in locations where he worked and lived. The outlet said it obtained commercially available location data that was anonymized but contained his phone’s device ID. Take a recent example that attracted a lot of media attention: A Catholic priest, using the hookup app Grindr, was tracked and outed as gay by The Pillar, a Catholic publication. “It’s the entry key to a whole ecosystem of tracking.” “One of the biggest points where you lose some control is when a device ID gets linked to a real identity,” Paul-Olivier Dehaye, a board member at PersonalData.io, a nonprofit focused on making data rights actionable, said. While the company’s privacy policy notes that a device ID is collected with user permission, it’s mandatory to give permission if you want to use the VPN.Īnd while technically “non-personal data,” a device ID, for example, can be matched with granular details that can be used to identify an individual and, in some cases, even reconstruct a person’s movements and behaviors. “As you have noted, users’ device IDs might be used with their consent, which is exclusively non-personal data,” Petryk said. Julia Petryk, a spokesperson for MacPaw, ClearVPN’s parent company, said the company was transparent with its tracking through a disclosure on its website and a mandatory review of its privacy policy through the app. ClearVPN also says in its privacy policy that it collects device IDs. “While we accept and understand our strategy’s criticism, millions of people would be less safe and less private without it,” Miller said in an email.ĮxpressVPN’s privacy policy discloses that it also collects device IDs to track where users learned about and signed up for its mobile app. Tyler Miller, a spokesperson for the company, said that user IDs are only collected to figure out where purchases came from (for example, if the app download came because of a specific ad) and that customers are notified when that data is collected. NordVPN, meanwhile, says it uses its customers’ user IDs and device IDs for marketing purposes. But many of their privacy policies do allow for other sorts of data collection.ĬyberGhost VPN, for example, promotes “absolute privacy on all devices” with its service, but its privacy policy notes that it can collect specific “non-personal” information on devices, including their advertising ID, battery levels, gyro-sensor data (the sensor used to automatically rotate a phone screen), and mobile service provider.ĬyberGhost didn’t respond to requests for comment. And we searched through our Citizen Browser data for VPN Facebook advertisements to see not only how VPNs are marketing themselves on Facebook but also how they’re making use of that platform’s personal-data-driven advertising machine.Īgain, none of these VPN’s say they collect any sort of logs of user activity. We also ran their websites through Blacklight, our tool for detecting third-party trackers. To get a sense of exactly what sorts of information VPNs are grabbing, The Markup examined the privacy policies of 14 popular VPN companies. “A VPN helps secure and helps privatize some of what I do on the web.”īut while VPNs say they do not log people’s activity-meaning their browsing, who they call, which TV shows they watch-that does not mean they’re not siphoning data from their users and even their prospective customers. “Especially because I’m a content creator, it’s so important to me to uphold my own security and privacy standards,” she said. Morse said she uses VPNs like ProtonVPN to help keep her online activities private because of her public persona. Surface Book 2 (Image credit: Windows Central) I think I can finally ditch pencils and paper for good. It showcases the power of UWP and the quality of the Surface inking hardware. Sketchable has evolved immeasurably since its debut on Windows 8, and has taken its place in the spotlight as one of the Surface line's greatest apps. The Malboro drawing was the first time I'd really attempted to draw properly on any of my Surface devices, but Sketchable made the transition easy. There is a limit on the amount of undoing you can do, but I never hit that, which appears to be quite generous. Still, if you make a mistake, it's easy to cycle backward through your actions. Sketchable goes one step further, though, allowing you to toggle touch off completely, to ensure that the screen will only register pen inputs. The Surface Book can detect your palm resting on the screen when you're inking, preventing you from making erroneous taps. I assigned the Tortillon tool for smudging shades for example, which feels like something you might do using traditional mediums like charcoal. The marker came in handy for changing the shadows in larger areas, and the tortillon tool made blending shades easy.Īs noted, Sketchable makes it quick and easy to adjust the opacity and the size of each brush with a simple tap and drag, but you can even assign tools to the Surface Pen's rubber, and even your finger to further streamline your workflow. The pen tool responds really well to the Surface Book's pressure sensitivity, making it easy to create fine details, switching between tones for highlights and shadows using the on-screen color pallet. To draw my Malboro, I used a combination of Sketchable's tools, using the Pen tool as my primary method, supplemented by the Marker and the Tortillon tool. Sketchable feels as though it was designed to be used on Surface devices, and in that endeavor, Sketchable is nothing but triumphant. Using Sketchable on the Surface Book is as much about at the hardware as well as the software. Sketchable simply lives and breathes Surface. I didn't get to try this out for myself yet, but it's plain to see how the Dial would enhance the overall usability of the program. Sketchable is also among the first apps to utilize the Surface Dial for additional radial menus and other fine-tuning. Sketchable even has an exhaustive list of keyboard shortcuts listed via the hamburger menu, if that's how your workflow is set up. There's no need to reach for a mouse or keyboard with Sketchable, but the ability to manipulate the canvas rotation, zoom, and other regular features are available via the left menu, in addition to standard touch controls. Sketchable simply lives and breathes Surface.Ī tap on any of the tools in Sketchable opens up a config menu which allows you to easily control the opacity and size of each brush by moving the pen up and down on the brush preview panel. Unlike traditional drawing tools, Sketchable makes all of its features and functions configurable using the pen alone, which is a far cry from more mainstream tools which often rely heavily on switching to mouse and keyboard shortcuts. Sketchable is designed for use on devices like the Surface, but it can also be used with an external digitizer like those from Wacom. It appears to me that if it happens, it is a difficult choice, especially in areas such as north, east or south, and also not all at once. Often, in the case of progress, the collection is more valuable. Interactable buttons and objects often have a dusting of pixels wide even on my curved monitor. If the player continues to linger on each screen and fully absorb what they see, its reinforcedor forcing to do it if they resuscitate, always and relentlessly – repeating pixelhunting. There is always a sense that the worlds laws of physics fraying at the edges are only doing their own thing as long as you pass through to somewhere else. Almost sealed railway car half-buried under sand dune could contain a passenger engrossed in a book, not plussed at your arrival. It’s an uncommon time to cling back to civilization and strange people of many different species almost disinterested in a frond of sea flora bound past the same time, as if this is only the common occurrence. As a softly shaded and beautifully illustrated set of scenes, Slice of Sea ruins its fragments and crumbles dusty and disolate but nothing else abandons. As you clear your path, Seaweed doesn’t have to stand on the pressure sensor, but also ride along. Like the Submachine game, you’re a disembodied presence with a click in the world. Click and the item just starts looking like an item fits into the inventory, ready to use anywhere. Seaweed standing on one rock pillar and an item that you need to sit on another, nowhere near you? It’s irrelevant. The biggest twist of the axiomatic device of Slice of Seas is that despite having a character and an inventory of items on-screen, there is no physical limitation to what you can interact with. Seaweeds can’t do all alone, thus it’s up to you to click on the world for interaction with its many objects and machines. By using the arrow keys or your WASD, they fly through a beautiful watercolour world through the aforese of a very long pilgrimage to the sea. Players are allowed to control Seaweed, a little oceanic remlin piloting a pair of Wallace-inspired techno-trousers. There were no cruel and sudden deaths to suffer, but progress required a reasonable effort to make the developers feel well. Even though the note and item name are occasionally scrawled so as to help players the wrong way, progress came purely through poking and extinguishing strange devices across multiple screens to nudge their connections and purpose. A lonely, isolated vibe characterized these escape room-esque adventures. The most notable of these is the thirteen adventures in his Submachine and the eight Daysmare-Durban game. Slice of Sea is a short, hand-painted puzzle adventure by his prolific comic author Mateusz Skutnik, who is releasing games since the Flash era. The new adventure game Slice of Sea reminded me why: There are evolutionary branches in the adventure game that my brain isn’t for, and this is a direct descendant of a very demanding and thorny lineage. I would never consider myself an expert in this type of genre. I grew up playing multi-play games, tossing my teeth on Sierra’s cruel quests before moving into a full-fledged set of romps for Lucasarts. Slice of Seas, a beautiful and soothing facade, hides a prickly adventure from the Flash era. There's lots of dirty money in Shawshank-bribes, kickbacks, and general greasiness-and someone needs to keep track of it.The guards and warden soon start letting him set up trust funds and tax shelters for them out of the library. A short time later, the sisters' leader, Bogs Diamond, is found in his cell. They threaten to stab him in the brain with a razor-we're still not quite sure how that works-and he assures them that brain damage causes people to bite down. When the sisters come at him a week later, he threatens to bite off anything they put in his mouth. He tries to fight them off with detergent catalyst – which could blind you if you get it in your eyes – but these guys aren't too concerned about safety with chemicals. The sisters come at Andy again in the laundry room. They came at him in the shower three days after he arrived. The bruises come by way of the sisters, Shawshank's resident rape gang. And not the "I ran into the door" kind of bruises. A few days later, Andy says thank-you while sporting bruises on his face. Cash is exchanged and the rock hammer arrives.Red agrees to get the rock hammer, but warns Andy not to snitch on him if he gets caught with it. Clearly, he's not up to snuff on what prison is all about. Red is concerned that he'll use it as a weapon.
The majority of natives to the river area were hunters and gatherers. It was used for assisting with agriculture, gathering fish, and trading with others. The abundance of resources and overall size attracted these individuals to settle near the water. Several different Native American groups lived in the surrounding area, including the Ojibwa, Ho-Chunk, Meskwaki, and Choctaw Native Americans. The river system has always played a pivotal role in the lives of those who inhabit the surrounding area. Red River of the South įurther information: Mississippi River § History There are 20 dams and 49 other power generating facilities along the Ohio River. Along with shipping energy resources, the Ohio River also creates energy with dams and other power-generating facilities. These resources account for 70% of the cargo. Typically, the cargo being shipped are energy resources such as coal. On average the Ohio River transports over 230 million tons of cargo. The depth also allows for commerce throughout the river on barges. The water is also home to 150 species of fish ranging from catfish to certain species of salmon and trout. These deeper waters allows multiple species of fish to thrive. The depth varies, due to the dams from its origin point to Cincinnati, it averages approximately 27 feet (8.2 m) before deepening to a maximum 168 feet (51 m) near Louisville, Kentucky. It is one mile wide at Smithland dam, the widest point of the river. The river has the capacity to provide enough water for over five million people. The Ohio River drains portions of eight states, including, Illinois, Indiana, New York, Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and West Virginia. The Ohio River runs 981 miles (1582 km) long, starting at the meeting of the Allegheny River and the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania ending in Cairo, Illinois, where it then flows into the Mississippi. About 850 miles (1,370 km) of the river is navigable from Minneapolis-St. The Upper Mississippi River covers approximately half of the Mississippi River's length. The bottom of the river is composed of a thin layer of clay, silt, loam, and sand, which lay above a stratum of glacial outwash. The Driftless Area is defined by a multitude of limestone bluffs that have been molded all the way since the last ice age, due to water melting from glaciers. Most of the Upper Mississippi goes through the center of the Driftless Area, around 15,000 sq mi (39,000 km 2) in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois that has managed to stay free of glacial flows covering the past two million years. The Upper Mississippi River spans around 1,250 miles (2,010 km) from Lake Itasca in Minnesota to Cairo, Illinois. This system of waterways is maintained by the U.S. Important connecting waterways include the Illinois Waterway, the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. įrom the perspective of modern commercial navigation, the system includes the above as well as navigable inland waterways which are connected by artificial means. Before the Mississippi River reaches the Gulf of Mexico, it runs into its distributary, the Atchafalaya River. Given their flow volumes, major Ohio River tributaries like the Allegheny, Tennessee, and Wabash rivers are considered important tributaries to the Mississippi system. The major tributaries are the Arkansas, Illinois, Missouri, Ohio and Red rivers. įrom the perspective of natural geography and hydrology, the system consists of the Mississippi River itself and its numerous natural tributaries and distributaries. In the United States, the Mississippi drains about 59% of the country's rivers. The Mississippi River is the largest drainage basin in the United States. The Mississippi River System, also referred to as the Western Rivers, is a mostly riverine network of the United States which includes the Mississippi River and connecting waterways. |
